EPrints Training

Picture of Cana

Hi, my name is Cana, and I am the EPrints training co-ordinator. The EPrints team is working hard to deliver high quality training courses to help you and your institution get the full benefit from your repository.

I look forward to meeting the members of your repository team at our next event.

You can email me at: gm05r@ecs.soton.ac.uk.

Upcoming Courses

We just ran a training course, so we don't have another full course scheduled yet. Look out for announcements of new courses, at Southampton and elsewhere, and for related EPrints training and development events at Open Repositories 2009, which is being held in May in Atlanta, Georgia.

We are planning on running two one-day courses in conjunction with the RSP project in December 2008. We will announce details soon.

If you wish to arrange for a course to be held within your institution or organisation, please contact EPrints Services.

In the mean time, the full course materials are available online for free in the EPrints Training Collection.

Why attend an EPrints Training Course?

Running a successful Institutional Repository requires skilled personnel who can make effective management and technical decisions that benefit the institution's staff and promotes the institution's research.

The EPrints training course caters for all members of a repository team - librarians, managers, and technical staff - promoting a shared understanding of the knowledge and skills required for the team to deliver and maintain an effective repository.

Programme Overview

Through demonstrations, lectures and hands-on exercises, supervised by members of the EPrints development team, attendees will become proficient in designing and configuring an EPrints repository.

Day 1 - Repository Capabilities and Customisation

The first part of the course covers the range of EPrints 3.1 capabilities and is useful for managers and library staff to understand the broad range of facilities that they can use for information management, access and reuse. It is also useful for the technical staff who will ultimately be implementing their requirements.

What you will learn:

  • Capabilities of the EPrints 3.1 software
  • How to configure the functionality of your repository - metadata, workflow, authority lists, browsing, searching
  • How to customise the appearance of your repository - branding and visual identity

Day 2 - Advanced Repository Customisation

The next part of the course explores customisation at a deeper level, addressing the EPrints scripting API used to produce bespoke reports, import and export plugins, tailor-made authority files and new action screens.

What you will learn:

  • The EPrints data model
  • How to access and manipulate EPrints using the API
  • How to write plugins for EPrints - import/export, action screens

Question and Answer Sessions

The course will also include opportunities to meet and network with EPrints repository staff working at Southampton, providing insights into the repository management issues involved in delivering a successful EPrints service. Time will be given to help solve any problems that you may have with your repository.

Lunch and refreshments are provided on each day. There will also be an evening social event on day 1.
